MBS MID-DAY: Giving Back Some Gains; Mostly Uneventful; Some Reprice Risk

Sometimes the 2nd day of a big geopolitical move will spiral into a volatile blaze of glory.  Other times, it's like today.

Bond markets are calmly marching to slightly weaker levels.  The same narrow trend has been intact all morning.  It began PERFECTLY in line with the 8:20am bond market "pit" open.  It was reinvigorated by stock market strength.  Global markets are simply trading in a "risk-on" direction (stock prices and bond yields higher) after yesterday's big "risk-off" move.

As expected, the recent underperformance of MBS is allowing them to stand stronger in the face of broader bond market weakness this morning.  For instance, MBS have given up just UNDER half of yesterday's gains while Treasuries have given up just OVER half of theirs.

Overnight, Treasuries were more volatile.  10yr yields made highs at 2.494.  10's are currently at 2.4836.  We'll be watching to see what happens if they make it back to that overnight high (also yesterday morning's low).  On a break higher, the next technical target would be 2.51.  More importantly, it would likely push MBS into widespread reprice risk territory.

Sometimes the 2nd day of a great geopolitical movement will degenerate into a volatile blaze of glory.  Other times, it's like today.

Bond markets walk quietly at slightly lower levels.  The same close trend was intact throughout the morning.  It started perfectly in line with the 08:20 open market bonds 'divide '.  He has been reinvigorated by the strength of the stock market.  The global markets are trading simply in a direction 'risk on' (price of the shares and higher bond yields) after "risk-off" big yesterday moved.

As expected, the recent underperformance of MBS is allowing them to stand stronger against the broader market bond weakness this morning.  For example, MBS gave up just under half of the gains of yesterday so that the Treasury bills have given up slightly more than half of them.

The day after, Treasury bills was more volatile.  high yields of 10 yr to 2.494.  10 are currently 2.4836.  We will watch to see what happens if they make it back to this high during the night (also the bottom of yesterday morning).  A highest break, the next technical target would be 2.51.  More important still, it would probably push MBS in territory likely to re-price generalized .

MBS RECAP: Bond Markets Slightly Stronger Today, Capping Full Week of Gains

Gain access to the most accurate real-time back month TBA indications from Thomson Reuters and Tradeweb. LEARN MORE MBS RECAP: Bond Markets Slightly Stronger Today, Capping Full Week of Gains

Treasuries and MBS walked a cautious path to the exits today, staying perfectly inside the middle of yesterday's trading range.  The overnight session was less dramatic than recent examples and Treasury trading in Asia/Europe seemed less interested in Portuguese drama.

Interestingly enough, Treasuries actually performed better than German Bunds, hinting at some underlying/inherent strength in US bond markets.  MBS were feeling the same vibes and kept decent pace with the rally.

Prices improved steadily until just after the noon hour.  From there on out, everything went sideways after a brief correction.  Bonds seemed to take limited cues from equities markets, but volume and participation were so low that it doesn't make sense to read much into the movement.

Bottom line, looking at things from a 10yr Treasury perspective, yields are right near the zone that has seen the bigger bounces of 2014 (2.47-2.52).  The risk is that this becomes an extended resistance area that makes for a longer term bounce.  This could be ruled out with a break below 2.40, but until we're heading more convincingly in that direction or actually making that break, I'm feeling a bit more cautious heading into next week.

Budget 2014: Bonds, rupee give up gains; deficit target seen as 'challenging'

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
MUMBAI: Indian bonds and the rupee currency ended weaker on Thursday, retreating from earlier one-week highs, on scepticism about whether the new government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi can achieve its ambitious fiscal deficit target.

Bond prices and the rupee had initially rallied after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley stuck to the fiscal deficit target of 4.1 per cent of gross domestic product for this fiscal year set by the previous government.

The government also revised upwards the market borrowing to a gross 6 trillion rupees ($100.42 billion) from 5.97 trillion rupees in the interim budget, well within analysts' expectations.

But some of the optimism faded as Moodys' Investors Service and Fitch Ratings expressed doubts whether the government could meet that target, pointing to the lack of specific details about ways to meet spending and revenue projections.

"The budget was a bit of a disappointment in terms of no clear roadmap for reduction of subsidies or how the tax revenue will be achieved," said Bekxy Kuriakose, head of fixed income at Principal PNB Asset Management.

The benchmark 10-year bond yield at one point fell as much as 9 basis points on the day to 8.64 per cent, its lowest since July 3. The yield closed up 4 basis points on the day, at 8.77 per cent.

The partially convertible rupee earlier rose as high as 59.57 per dollar, its strongest since July 3. The unit ended at 60.19/20, versus the previous close of 59.75/76, down 0.8 per cent on the day,

Traders said there was also some paring of positions ahead of Friday's 150-billion-rupee ($2.49-billion) bond auction.

"Inflation will be key, going ahead and supply will remain a concern," Kuriakose added.

In his speech, Jaitley announced a slew of proposals, including raising the limit on foreign direct investment in defence and insurance ventures to 49 per cent from 26 per cent, which is expected to help the rupee in the medium- to longer- term.

The tight fiscal deficit targets are expected to help keep a lid on prices, a critical factor in a country where consumer price inflation was 8.28 per cent in May, and could potentially allow the Reserve Bank of India some room to cut interest rates.

However, Moodys' and Fitch said the government would need to provide more details of how it would meet the fiscal deficit target.

"From a ratings perspective, it is mildly positive to see there's a roadmap, but the lack of details gives us pause," Moody's sovereign rating analyst Atsi Sheth told Reuters in a telephone interview.

"The intent appears to be there, but the measures have not been really thought through yet," Sheth added.

MBS MID-DAY: Holding Solid Gains With Help From Stocks and Europe

With today continuing yesterday's tradition of offering very little by way of scheduled events, bond markets must look elsewhere for cues.  Actually, that's not really a fair conclusion considering bond markets haven't really been paying much attention to scheduled economic data in the first place.  So let's say this: with or without scheduled data, bond markets are taking cues from the same old places.

These include the stock market and European markets of late.  Both are being helpful today.  Stocks accelerated lower fairly quickly at 9:30am and European markets were supportive all night after weaker economic data.

MBS opened just slightly stronger and while they haven't been able to keep pace with the Treasury rally, they're still nearly a quarter point higher on the day.  10yr yields are testing an important technical level at 2.57.  If today is anything like yesterday in terms of European influence, the positivity could get more challenging after 12 noon when EU markets close.
