Job creation is accelerating in the U.S..

Keywords: unemployment rate, employment, U.S..

The U.S. economy created 290,000 jobs in April. A figure higher than expected but not enough to reduce unemployment.

The U.S. economy created 290,000 jobs in April, the majority (231,000) in the private sector, according to statistics from the Department of Labor. On the other hand, the figures in March were revised up sharply, from 162,000 to 230,000.
This acceleration in employment growth is good news, a sign of an economy "clearly in recovery" for Howard Simons, strategist with Bianco Research. This figure shows the entry in a "very reassuring phase of solid growth in employment" Kurt Karl, chief economist at Swiss Re
But these new creations are not sufficient to lower the unemployment rate, which now stands at 9.9%, against 9.7% for the first three months of the year. This increase is partly explained by the increasing number of Americans who have taken the necessary steps to declare themselves in search of a job.
In one year, the number of long-term unemployed has increased. It rose from 3.7 million in April 2009 to 6,700,000 last month.
According to economists from Natixis, the U.S. job market should grow slightly this year, before a real recovery that will probably not 2011.
