This trade is motivated by geographical better protection of intellectual property in India. The group may announce this week another major strategic focus in its activities and mobile video games, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Microsoft put on India and Indonesia instead of China's future development, due to inadequate protection against piracy in the Middle Kingdom, said this morning that its CEO, Steve Ballmer. "India is far from perfect but the protection of intellectual property far better there than in China", Ballmer said in an interview with Bloomberg, Hanoi. He added that "there was no market for selling software as such" in China because of widespread piracy which is rampant. The Chinese market of counterfeit software have doubled between 2005 and 2009, according to a study released in May in Washington by the Business Software Alliance.
Ballmer's warning is a further signal of the growing distrust of U.S. technology giants vis-à-vis the Chinese market. In March, Google had announced its withdrawal of China to escape government censorship. The intellectual property rights are hot topics raised by Timothy Geithner, Treasury Secretary and Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State at the China-US Strategic Dialogue, which opened yesterday in Beijing.
Another strategic focus is in preparation at Microsoft. The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, the group prepares to reorganize its mobile phone business and video games, it's just too uncompetitive. The "major changes" in these divisions could be announced this week.
