The first bond issue in Greece this year, considered a crucial test by the markets, has attracted four times more requests than the amount proposed, it was learned Monday.
Greece has launched the issuance of bonds for five years, hoping to raise between 3 and 5 billion euros. The offer was at mid-day oversubscribed because the demand amounted to 20 billion euros.
"Currently, demand is 20 billion euros. This goes well beyond what was expected, is a relief," said a government official quoted by Dow Jones Newswires .
He said Athens will probably be limited to an amount of around 5 billion euros.
On Friday, the Greek branch of debt management had announced the launch of this program over five years, amounting to 3 and 5 billion euros.
Émisssion This is seen as a test of the ability of Greece to attract investors, while the drift of public finances has fueled worries about its solvency.
Greece should undertake in 2010 a program loan of some 54 billion euros.
